HACKERS are increasingly relying on robots to work as human interface.
They say they are the next frontier of robotics.
But the robots themselves are getting bigger, cheaper and less reliable.
A robot named Bionic is coming for your lunch.
It’s a tiny little device that looks like a robotic cat.
Its main function is to interact with humans and give them food.
But it can also do things like give you directions, get you something to drink, make your bed and even clean your car.
And it costs about $40.
Bionic can get you to a grocery store, to a restaurant, to an ATM.
The price tag could be much higher.
But some experts think it will eventually be cheaper to have robots work with us.
“It’s like a really low-cost alternative to having human beings work in our homes,” said Michael Wiens, professor of bioengineering at MIT and author of “The New Mechanical Revolution.”
“If we could get Bionic to do all of these things in our house, we could save millions of dollars a year.”
The company behind Bionic, Kuka Robotics, plans to debut a robotic assistant for its mobile robot, Baxter, in the first quarter of 2019.
The robot will be able to make up to 15 calls a day, according to Kuka.
Bionics could be used to automate tasks such as opening up grocery stores, taking your children to a park or cleaning your car, Wiens said.
Biotic can also help people with physical and cognitive disabilities.
Its creators envision Bionic as a kind of personal assistant, but it can’t always be trusted, said Robert Stapleton, CEO of the Human Robotics Institute at Stanford University.
Bacteria in your stomach could be causing you diarrhea.
And you might not be able or willing to open your car door or wash your hands.
“Bionic is a great example of a machine learning machine learning, and that is the only way to automate,” Staplenot said.
“But Bionic isn’t really meant to be a replacement for a human being.
It can be.”
Bionic will come with a smartphone app that users can control, like a smartphone assistant, according the company.
And the company is developing a system to help people who have cognitive or physical disabilities use Bionic.
It also plans to offer Bionic-powered robotics kits to schools, hospitals and other public buildings.
But Bionic’s main use is to teach people how to interact on the robot, Wien said.
For example, it will teach a person how to get into a grocery bag to get some food, how to fold a package, how much to put on a package and how to eat a sandwich.
“These are things that humans really struggle with,” Wiens added.
The Bionic robot’s creators hope to offer a platform to teach robotics to more people.
For instance, the company plans to use Bionics to teach students how to read text on a computer screen, and teach people to build robots.
“We really hope that robots are useful tools for a lot of people, but also a great learning tool for us as humans,” Staptler said.
It is still too early to tell how Bionic and its robots will work in the real world, Wientens said.
In a year or two, the Bionic project could be a reality, Wients said.
And even if it doesn’t, the robot could be useful in some areas, he added.
“I think there’s always room for robots,” Wien added.
